I read a lot of fantasy as a kid, and while many of the authors and individual stories have blurred together, certain bright spots remain. The stories of Diana Wynne Jones make up many of those. Vivid, willfully messy, peopled with strong characters that either skewered or transcended usual roles and tropes, and tied together with a distinctive voice, her work changed my perception of what fantasy is and can do, and helped shaped my tastes as a reader.
Rest in peace, Ms. Jones, and thank you for all the amazing stories.
